The community of Dresden is getting its first large housing development in nearly 30 years.
The development, Leisure Lane District, will be situated between Davies Street East and Leisure Lane. It's being built by local custom home builder Depencier Builders and is set to consist of eight semi-detached homes and 12 single-family homes starting at $297,000.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday morning at the development's model home on Davies Street East. Dresden resident Dave Depencier is the developer of the subdivision and said it was important for him to include different options of housing styles.
"We've got semi-detached units that are available, smaller single-family units that are available as well as if you want something larger. We've got three different levels of build so any building need is right here in one spot," he said. "I just feel like I know how important the housing industry and the need we have right now is. I know that there's different levels and different needs for everyone in different stages of their life."
Depencier added that his vision for the subdivision is to give each home its own individual style, no matter the size.
"The big thing for me was to make sure that we made it a unique look," he explained. "So that everything kind of looked a bit different giving everyone an opportunity to feel like they've got something special."
North Kent Councillors Jamie McGrail and Joe Faas were on hand for the ceremony. Faas called the project a positive step for the community.
"The economic benefit that this will have for the businesses downtown has got to be positive," Faas said. "I look at the 300 homes being built in Chatham...If you put it in population perspective, this is as big a deal for Dresden as the development is in Chatham."
According to Depencier, they have already sold three units and are aiming to move along with the project as quickly as possible.
