Concerns about barn fires in Perth County

Barn fires in Perth County on Wednesday has triggered some concerns from the fire chief from Perth East and West Perth.

There was also a false alarm.

In a release, Perth East and West Perth Fire Chief Bill Hunter said there is more at stake than just a barn and that was evident with the loss of livestock and risk to fire crews responding in winter weather conditions.

Responding firefighters had to deal with poor visibility and icy roads.

The first response came at 10 a.m. on Wednesday near Amulree and while the second barn fire was reported at 10 p.m. with crews not getting home until early Thursday morning.

Fire prevention officer James Marshall is encouraging a proactive approach to check on electrical integrity, clearing sawdust and cobwebs, removing extension cords and practicing farm safe smoking practices.

There are also some educational videos available - “More at Stake Than the Barn” - produced by the Perth East and West Perth Fire Departments and filmed in Perth County and available on YouTube.
