Catholic, Anglican weekend services cancelled across southwestern Ontario

Several churches across southwestern Ontario will be closed Sunday due to concerns over COVID-19.

The dioceses of London and Huron have each decided to cancel weekend masses after Ontario's chief medical officer of health recommended cancelling all gatherings over 250 people.

In a media release Saturday, Diocese of London said "Churches should remain open for private prayer and Eucharistic Adoration. Daily Mass will continue during the week."

The Roman Catholic diocese serves approximately 450,000 Catholics from Windsor to Woodstock, Goderich to Port Dover, and communities in between.

Bishop Todd Townshend of the Diocese of Huron issued a statement Friday, saying "...the Anglican bishops of the province of Ontario have collectively made the decision temporarily suspend public worship services, effective Sunday March 15."

The Diocese of Huron includes more than 200 churches stretching from Windsor to Port Rowan to Tobermory.
