Western student tests positive for COVID-19

Western University has confirmed that one of its students has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) notified the university of the situation on Friday, the same day six new positive cases of the virus were confirmed locally. Further details about the student have not been released.

"We want to assure you that the health and safety of our campus community remains our number one priority," the university said in a statement. "Western has carefully planned for this scenario and we are coordinating closely with the MLHU to ensure the student is receiving appropriate care and that proper precautions are being taken to minimize the risk of transmission."

Western announced last week that it would be cancelling all classes until March 17. Starting on Wednesday, all applicable classes are being conducted online for the remainder of the semester.

Another Western University student in her 20s also tested positive for the illness at the end of January after returning to the city from Wuhan, China. She was the first reported case in the London region and has since fully recovered.

There are currently a total of 11 confirmed COVID-19 cases in London-Middlesex. More than 300 people across Ontario have also tested positive.
