Officials at Windsor Regional Hospital have confirmed the region's first COVID-19-related death.
A patient in his 80s succumbed to the virus Tuesday night.
So far, 96 people across Canada have died because of COVID-19. The death toll in Ontario is 37 as of Wednesday morning.
Windsor Regional Hospital Chief of Staff Dr. Wassim Saad told BlackburnNews.com there are approximately 50 patients being treated for COVID-19 symptoms at the hospital. Of those, 14 have had their test results come back positive, and four patients are in intensive care.
"We had always said it was not a matter of if, but when we would get a case in Windsor and then, of course, we had our first case," said Saad. "Unfortunately as part of the pandemic and what this virus does, it was also a matter of not if, but when we were going to have our first death."
The patient had travelled to Michigan and suffered an underlying health condition.
