Getting active for CKHA frontline staff

Fitness instructors from across Chatham-Kent are coming together to get the community moving, while also helping out a great cause.

"Sweat for Safety" is an online fundraiser for frontline workers at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

"I have come together with a bunch of instructors across Chatham-Kent to put together this Facebook Live fundraiser to promote social distancing, and still getting our exercise in while stuck at home," said organizer Lauren Bonner.

Every day, an instructor leads a different class online. Participants can join from home and are just asked to make a donation.

"I have a lot of friends and family who work in the healthcare field and I'm honestly worried for them," said Bonner. "So I'm just doing what I can to help. I've done fundraisers in the past for Chatham-Kent Hospice, and I wasn't able to do that this year, so I'm was just kind of finding a way to help out in the community again."

Bonner said the money raised will go to the highest priority needs.

"Right now obviously, that is their personal protective equipment, including the gowns, gloves, masks, goggles. Everything that they need to protect their person."

Classes started on Monday, March 30, and after just two days, they've raised $590.

Wednesday's class is yoga at 4 p.m. Thursday is dancefit at 10 a.m. Friday is belly dancing at 11 a.m. Saturday is barre at 9 a.m. and Sunday is kids wiggle at 3 p.m.

Monday was low impact cardio and Tuesday was adult ballet. Both of those classes are still available on the Facebook page. Classes are 30 minutes to an hour in length.
