After days of double-digit increases in the number of newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the London area, there was a much smaller increase to start the week.
The Middlesex London Health Unit reported on Monday only two more people tested positive for the virus, bringing the local total of confirmed cases since the outbreak began to 136.
Prior to the weekend, the London area had just 92 confirmed cases, but that number shot well over the 100 mark with a total of 42 cases being confirmed Saturday and Sunday.
The number of COVID-19-related deaths in the region is at five. Local public health officials have stated 18 people who were previously diagnosed with the virus have since recovered.
The London Health Sciences Centre currently has 26 patients in its care confirmed to have COVID-19. Nine of those patients are in intensive care – four at Victoria Hospital and five at University Hospital.
No new cases of the coronavirus have been reported in Elgin and Oxford counties since Saturday, when Southwestern Public Health confirmed a man in his 90s had been hospitalized with the virus.
Provincially, Ontario health officials have confirmed 309 new COVID-19 cases and 13 additional deaths. The total number of confirmed cases in the province now sits at 4,347, while the number of COVID-19-related deaths has reached 132.
Of those sickened by the virus, 589 have been hospitalized, 160 of which are in intensive care on a ventilator to help them breathe. 1,624 of the cases have been resolved. Healthcare workers make up 10.4 per cent of all confirmed cases.
There have been 46 outbreaks reported in Ontario long-term care homes.
