Two local organizations are teaming up to ensure migrant workers coming to Ontario have the information they need during this tumultuous time.
Leamington OPP and the Migrant Worker Community Program (MWCP) are now working together to tackle the language barrier and inform migrant workers in southwestern Ontario of the protocols in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The MWCP said there are approximately 4,000 migrant workers in the Leamington and Kingsville areas. To highlight the importance of social distancing and other measures, videos have been created in both English and Spanish.
"The vast local greenhouse industry relies on these essential workers to plant and harvest greenhouse crops," the MWCP said in a release. "Because the works often travel in groups to work, to shop, and to socialize, it is important that they practice the social distancing and hand sanitization rules that are now in place."
As more migrant workers are approved to travel, MWCP said it anticipates the number of workers in the area will increase by up to approximately 10,000 by July and August. The essential workers will be coming from countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Jamaica.
