Flooding expected on Erie Shore Drive

Properties along Erie Shore Drive may once again be hit with flooding as strong wind gusts this weekend are expected to create powerful waves on Lake Erie.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued another flood watch on Friday for Erie Shore Drive and the Lake Erie shoreline. This follows previous watches and warnings issued this week.

Conservation officials said moderate to strong wind gusts of up to 30 kilometres per hour are expected to start on Saturday afternoon. Winds are expected to ramp up on Sunday with gusts of up to 50 km/h.

During peak winds, waves of up to 1.5 metres should be expected on Lake Erie.

A statement from the LTVCA says that, although wind conditions are expected to calm down on Monday, it will be shortlived.

"Due to high lake levels, there is a risk that wave action could damage shoreline protection works and cause erosion all along the Lake Erie shoreline in Chatham-Kent and Elgin County, including along the high bluff areas," read a media release. "Flooding is expected along Erie Shore Drive in Chatham-Kent Saturday afternoon and throughout the day Sunday."

Residents are once again reminded to avoid the shoreline over safety concerns.

The flood watch is expected to remain in effect until Monday.
