Major donations will provide thousands of families with groceries

Approximately 3,500 low-income families in Windsor-Essex will get a grocery gift card worth $100 to help them buy food during the pandemic.

The Solcz Family Foundation and the Windsor Spitfires have each donated $100,000 to buy the gift cards, which will be distributed to local families with children who are in the Ontario Works program.

"Our hope is that others who have the resources will consider joining us and donating what they can," said Kyrsten Solcz, the executive director of the Solcz Family Foundation.

The City of Windsor and the WindsorEssex Community Foundation kicked in funding, bringing the total amount to $355,000.

Ontario Works supports about 3,500 families with children in Windsor-Essex. The gift cards will be distributed as soon as possible.

"In challenging times like these, it is more important than ever for the community to work together," said Executive Director of the WindsorEssex Community Foundation, Lisa Kolody.

The gift cards are good at any of the Loblaw's family of grocery stores including Zehrs, No Frills, and Real Canadian Superstore.
