London defers property tax payments for two months

London homeowners are being given some extra time to pay their property taxes.

In a move aimed at easing financial burdens for those struggling amid the COVID-19 pandemic, city council unanimously approved a motion Tuesday night to defer the due date for 2020 property taxes for 60 days.

"Deferring the payment of property taxes provides immediate financial relief to residents while we continue to face economic and health concerns brought on by the pandemic," Mayor Ed Holder said in a statement. "We continue to work with other levels of government on further tools and supports for residents and businesses impacted by COVID-19."

For property owners who pay their taxes in installments, remaining due dates for payment are now the end of August, end of October, and December 15. Those who use the pre-authorized payment system will have billing dates spread over five payments - due at the end of August, the end of September, the end of October, the end of November, and December 15.

The city stressed there will be no interest or penalties for payments received on or before the revised tax due dates.

The property tax deferral is being done in addition to previously announced financial measures to help Londoners through the outbreak. Last month, council voted to waive interest and late fees for 60 days on all unpaid property tax bills due on March 31. Interest and penalties for unpaid water and sewer bills were also deferred for 60 days and all community improvement plan loan repayments were put off for two months.

Londoners with questions about their property taxes can call the city's tax office at 519-661-4540 or email taxoffice@london.ca.
