Day of Mourning extra poignant during pandemic

Tuesday marks the Day of Mourning, but this year, the commemoration for workers lost in the workplace will be different.

Because of social distancing measures, there will not be a ceremony. Instead, the Windsor and District Labour Council will present pre-recorded videos of speakers on it's Facebook page and website.

"We're having more varied speakers. We're having our health and safety activists, survivors, people who have lost family members, and we're also having some workers that are working amidst the pandemic," said President Brian Hogan.

The presentation will start at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

Hogan said the ceremony is extra special since so many workers deemed essential are putting their health at risk to ensure services continue during the pandemic.

"While everyone is affected by the crisis -- it's the workers on the frontline," he said. "Using the term essential worker for a grocery worker. No one would have used that term in the past, but we do need our food."

Residents are encouraged to light a candle in their front window at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday. Hogan said he hopes residents will keep the candle lit for 20 minutes in a silent vigil.

Over the past year, two workers have died on the job in Windsor-Essex.

This year, the community is also asked not to attend the memorial to workers who have been killed in the workplace in Reaume Park.
