London-Middlesex reports two new COVID-19 cases, one death

There has been another COVID-19 related death reported at a London-area long term care home.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said Monday a woman in her 80s in the unnamed long-term care facility is the latest to die from the virus. The death toll in the region now stands at 32. Thirteen of those deaths have occurred within local nursing homes, while four others were at retirement facilities.

Only two new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed Monday, bringing London-Middlesex's total number of cases since the outbreak began to 374. Of those cases, 92 per cent have been in London, four per cent in Strathroy-Caradoc, 1.6 per cent in Middlesex Centre, 1.1 per cent in Thames Centre, and 0.8 percent in North Middlesex.

There have been 100 cases reported in area long-term care homes and retirement homes. The London Health Sciences Centre has 34 people confirmed to have the virus in its care, 11 of whom are in intensive care. Outbreaks of the virus remain at Victoria Hospital's oncology unit and geriatric behavioural unit. The affected units are closed to new patient admissions and are undergoing enhanced cleaning measures.

According to local public health officials, 194 people have recovered from the virus.

In Oxford and Elgin counties, there were no new cases or deaths over the last 24 hours. The two counties, covered by Southwestern Public Health, have seen a total of 57 confirmed cases and four deaths. Twenty-four of the case have been resolved.

Provincially, 57 more deaths and 424 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed.

There has now been a total of 14,856 cases of the virus in Ontario, including 892 deaths.

The hardest-hit age group for COVID-19 related deaths continues to be seniors 80-years-old and older, with 607 deaths. The latest figures from Ontario public health officials show 497 deaths have been reported in long-term care homes. That is an increase of 42 deaths from the previous epidemiologic summary released on Sunday. There have been three additional outbreaks reported in long-term care homes across the province, bringing the total number of outbreaks to 170.

Of all Ontarians who have contracted the virus, 11.4 percent have had to be hospitalized. There are currently 945 people being treated in Ontario hospitals, 241 in the intensive care unit, and 191 in intensive care with a ventilator helping them to breathe.

The number of people to recover from COVID-19 has grown to 8,525.
