Doors at COVID-19 assessment centre now open to everyone

Officials at Windsor Regional Hospital are encouraging "anyone" who wants to be tested for COVID-19 to do so.

Following comments by the Premier of Ontario on Sunday, the WRH assessment centre, located at Ouellette Campus next to the emergency department, will now test any willing person for the novel coronavirus.

“Next week, we’ll release a detailed testing strategy. We’ll be targeting various sectors and hot spots across the province,” said Premier Doug Ford. “If you’re worried if you have COVID-19, or that you’ve been exposed to someone who has COVID-19 — even if you’re not showing symptoms, please go get a test. You will not be turned away.”

Ten new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex were confirmed on Sunday, bringing the total to 876.

Sunday's announcement comes shortly after the Windsor Essex County Health Unit announced plans to begin random testing within the community.

Residents who go to the Ouellette Campus for testing can also have a primary care examination while there.

“Our hope is that this gives additional incentive for individuals to seek not only tests but also medical care in a clinic like setting while possibly avoiding having to attend another clinic or placing pressure in our Emergency Department,” said Dr. Wassim Saad, WRH Chief of Staff.

The assessment centre first opened on March 16, 2020. The criteria for testing has gradually expanded since the beginning of April.

The WRH assessment centre is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
