Public school board post-lockdown improvement projects lined up

Plagued by numerous delays before the pandemic, construction at Sarnia's Great Lakes Secondary School (GLSS) remains on hold.

The Lambton Kent District School Board had asked Jasper Construction to have the auditorium ready to be turned over for occupancy by March 23, but schools have been closed since March break.

Director of Education John Howitt said they've been planning ahead for when work is allowed to resume on a number of improvement projects.

"We have been passing tenders over the last couple of board meetings, tenders have been approved by the board of trustees, with a caveat that permission is granted and orders are lifted to the point that the work can continue," said Howitt. "So we are scheduling and lining up our work to be hopefully completed this summer."

Howitt said they do have some concerns about supply chains and whether materials and labour will be available.

"Great Lakes has another roof project that was already part of the schedule, that tender goes for approval at the board meeting this coming week. And the other construction of the addition at Great Lakes, we're hoping to get it back on track when the orders get to the point where we can."

Construction of the estimated $25 million renovation and addition at the former St. Clair Secondary School started in late 2017.

Students from the now-closed SCITS high school on Wellington Street have been consolidated with the St. Clair student body at the Murphy Road site.
