A warning from The South Bruce OPP detachment after a local resident lost $12,000 to a scammer.
The con artist called to advise a resident in the Municipality of South Bruce their Social Insurance Number has been compromised. The victim was told the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are investigating. The resident obeyed instructions on depositing money into a Bitcoin machine.
Tech-savvy scammers use technology to create very convincing schemes to trick you into sending them money. They will commonly use the name of a real company in order to gain your trust so that you will send money or personal information to them.
The South Bruce OPP is asking you to verify any unsolicited contacts before you take any action. Unsolicited means that you didn't ask for it.
