G2G Rail Trail vandalized, damages in the 'tens of thousands'

The G2G Rail Trail has recently suffered severe vandalism, stemming from "careless and aggressive" ATV users.

In a release on July 13, the G2G Rail Trail Advisory Committee said that recently, the trail has been abused by ATV riders causing personal injury, trail damage and complaints from adjacent landowners.

The trail is designed and maintained solely for walking, hiking and biking and some sections for use by snowmobiles in the winter. Under COVID-19 protocols, signs were installed this spring expressing the trails intended uses, only to be ignored by ATV riders and vandalized. Gates and bollards were also installed for safety purposes, with many gates opened and vandalized, too, with damages in the tens of thousands of dollars. ATV tire tracks are consistently found in areas where this vandalism has occurred.

The OPP is now receiving consistent reports of incidents involving ATVs on the trail, and are now patrolling the trail and have begun issuing charges instead of warnings.

Anyone who notices illegal ATV activity on the G2G Rail Trail is to call 9-1-1 immediately.
