A football team in Chatham-Kent is helping local residents cool off this summer while trying to keep players on the field.
Chatham-Kent Cougars players will be peddling their way through neighbourhoods on ice cream carts all summer to raise funds to pay for team equipment.
Team President Selwyn Jordan said the COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench into their season and registration money had to be refunded. He added that running a football team is expensive and he's trying to get his players back on the field soon.
"Hopefully we'll be back on the field soon, maybe in August or early in September. But until then we'll continue to [sell ice cream] and see if we can have fun with it," Jordan said.
Jordan said the ice cream carts are a throwback to days gone by and will bring back a lot of memories for parents as well as offer a new experience for their children.
"I think people like the nostalgia of Dickie Dee's, seeing the Dickie Dee's. A lot of parents remember them from back in the day," said Jordan. "A lot of people hear those bells and it's funny how they spring into action looking to hail a Dickie Dee down and then find some coins so they can buy some ice cream," he added.
Jordan said the ice cream carts will be rolling daily from 6-9 p.m. weekdays and 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. on weekends, offering 11 popsicle flavours under $5.
The ice cream routes are posted on their Facebook and Instagram pages at Cougars' Dickie Dee.
The Chatham-Kent Cougars have been around since 2006.
