Just over one month after reopening St. Clair College in Windsor, one of its students has tested positive for COVID-19.
The college confirmed Monday evening that it had recently been informed by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit of the positive case.
According to the health unit, the risk of transmission associated with this case remains low due to the college's current public health measures. All classmates of the infected individual have been told to self-monitor for 14 days, however, they are permitted to continue to attend school in person as long as they adhere to the existing public health measures.
“On behalf of the entire St. Clair community of students and staff, I wish a speedy and thorough recovery to the student affected,” said St. Clair President Patti France in a news release. “The larger lesson we’re taking from this is that our pandemic plan and all of its related procedures have been put in place for a very good reason, demanding conscientious recognition and adherence by students and staff. Our collective well-being is dependent upon individual behaviour, so we each have an essential role to play to protect ourselves, our classmates and our colleagues.”
The college reopened its campus to several hundred students during the spring and summer to allow them to complete their studies in limited-attendance labs, workshops, and clinics. Classes were cancelled for all students at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in March.
The college is continuing to enforce physical distancing, mask-wearing, and restricted group gathering on campus.
Six new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were announced by the health unit on Monday, bringing the total number of active cases in the Windsor-Essex region to 102.
