Municipal dog tag enforcement set to start

Time is running out quickly for pet owners in Chatham-Kent who haven't purchased their 2020 municipal dog tag yet.

Representatives from Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) will begin dog tag enforcement across the municipality starting on Monday, August 24 with animal control officers contacting dog owners who have yet to purchase their 2020 tags.

The municipality’s Responsible Animal Ownership By-law #93-2015 requires that all dog owners must obtain municipal dog licences for their dogs each year.  Residents who fail to purchase 2020 dog tags risk being fined $240.

Dog tags can be purchased at the animal shelter in Chatham, at the Civic Centre, over the phone by calling 519-360-1998 or on the PAWR website. The cost of a new tag is $38 per dog or $28 if sterilized along with a $10 late fee.

Bylaw enforcement officers will be identified by their PAWR uniforms as well as a name tag. The officers will also be driving marked PAWR vehicles and taking COVID-19 precautions while talking with residents.
