Huron Perth Public Health reports COVID-19 fatality

Huron Perth Public Health is reporting the death of a resident at Cedarcroft Retirement Home in Stratford who had tested positive for COVID-19.

The resident, who had underlying health conditions, became sick with COVID-19 symptoms last week.

“We are very sorry to hear of this loss,” says Dr. Miriam Klassen, Medical Officer of Health. “Our thoughts are with the individual’s family and friends, as well as with Cedarcroft residents and staff during this difficult time.”

Huron Perth Public Health continues to work closely with Cedarcroft to support case and contact management and infection control. As of November 3, there are 9 confirmed cases associated with this outbreak – 7 residents and 2 staff. All affected residents continue to be cared for at Cedarcroft. Testing on staff and residents at the home continues for anyone who develops symptoms; if new cases are identified, close contacts may also be tested whether symptomatic or not.

“We are saddened at the passing of a long-time resident who over the years was active, engaged and loved by neighbours and staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time,” says Dan Vito, Executive Director of Cedarcroft Place.

“We know how serious this infection can be for our vulnerable populations, including our seniors in retirement and long-term care homes and in those with underlying health conditions,” says Dr. Klassen. “HPPH continues to work closely alongside all retirement homes and long-term care facilities to protect residents and staff.”

There is also one active case in Perth County unrelated to the outbreak.
