Reopening of Sarnia Library still weeks away

Reopening Sarnia's downtown library is still several weeks away, according to Lambton County's cultural services general manager.

Andrew Meyer told Lambton County Council Wednesday, the City of Sarnia has informed them the heating, ventilation and air conditioning renovation won't be complete for several more weeks.

"Obviously a functional HVAC system is critical to activating services at that site, particularly during COVID, with some of the recommendations concerning ventilation," said Meyer. "We have delayed our start date for both curbside pickup and limited public access for computer use, WI-FI use, academic research, as we've implemented at other branches, we've delayed that at Sarnia Library until the renovation work is complete."

Meyer said they hope to "at least" offer curbside pickup by mid-November.

"Staff that remained on indefinite layoff in Sarnia Library have been recalled effective November 9, so that's this Monday, in anticipation that work will be completed within the coming weeks."

Currently, Meyer said half of the building has a functioning heating system and it could be December before the library is reopened for public use.

The county started reopening its libraries in September, after they were closed March 17 by provincial order to help contain the spread of COVID-19.
