Crews hustling to clean up after powerful wind storm

The head of Chatham-Kent Public Works is reporting that Sunday's wind storm that caused flooding and property damage along Erie Shore Drive will take a couple of days to clean up.

Director of Public Works Ryan Brown said Hydro One crews are slowly restoring power in the area because a flying roof took down a few hydro lines along Dyke Road. Brown also said some flooded roads are closed, including Erie Shore Drive and the public should stay away while the debris gets cleaned up. Brown added at least one house was severely damaged by the storm but luckily no one had to be evacuated from their homes.

"Hydro is trying to catch up to get to all the scenes. I know they're on the scene right now on Erie Shore Drive where some flying debris took out hydro lines on Erie Shore Drive. So, that area has been blocked off since Sunday afternoon," said Brown. "There's some substantial debris on Erie Shore Drive aside from the hydro. So we're anticipating probably two days of clean up and any maintenance we may need to do to the flood control infrastructure there."

Hydro One is reporting that some of their customers near Erie Beach and south of Tilbury will have power restored late Monday afternoon while work continues to restore power at Rondeau Park. Some at Rondeau Bay Estates will have their power back by late Monday night. Restoration efforts also continue for hundreds of Hydro One clients at Mitchell's Bay and Jeannette's Creek. McGeachy Pond Conservation Area and a thousand acres of fertile farmland near Erie Shore Drive were not damaged.

"We've had quite a number of significant storms in the past few years and this is definitely up there with some of the worst regarding the amount of water coming over the road," Brown said.
