UPDATE: Begley School closed 'until further notice'

An outbreak of COVID-19 cases at a Windsor elementary school has led to the facility being closed indefinitely.

"F.W. Begley P.S. will be closed until further notice," read a statement posted on the Greater Essex County District School Board's official website.

Last Wednesday, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit declared an outbreak at Begley School and sent students home to self-isolate for 14 days, as is the general protocol laid out by provincial and local health officials. A letter was sent to parents and posted on the website, providing instructions for parents and options on where to go to get tested.

According to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, there are currently 39 confirmed cases of COVID-19 tied to the school. To date, 29 students and eight staff have tested positive for the virus. Two other students are probable cases.

Windsor Regional Hospital had dedicated testing for staff and students at Begley School. Since the school was dismissed, 283 students, 47 staff and 141 family members were tested for COVID-19.

There is currently a total of 41 cases that have been connected to the board as a whole.

Over the weekend, two cases were confirmed at the English public board's buildings. One was reported Saturday at Sandwich West Public School, the other on Sunday at Riverside Secondary School in east Windsor. Classes at the latter two schools are being held Monday as usual.

Meanwhile, the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board has six confirmed cases in its system. W.J. Langlois Elementary is closed for two weeks with four of those cases there. One case each is confirmed at both St. William School in Lakeshore and F.J. Brennan Secondary in Windsor.
