Active cases in Windsor-Essex top 500

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported another 66 cases of COVID-19 Monday morning, pushing the total since the pandemic began to 4,054.

Of those new cases, ten are from close contact with cases already being monitored by the health unit. One other case is a healthcare worker. How another 55 patients were infected is still being investigated by public health nurses.

The number of active cases in the region now numbers 501.

There are 34 people currently being treated in the hospital, and eight of them are in intensive care.

Since the region entered the red or control level on the province's COVID-19 response frame-work there have been 425 new cases of COVID-19. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said this indicates the additional public health measures are not having the desired effect.

"Despite the restrictions from orange and now the red zone, our case counts are not changing and based on that data our case rates are comparable to the areas that are in lockdown," said Dr. Ahmed.

Dr. Ahmed and local epidemiologists will continue to monitor case rates this week and make a recommendation to the province on moving to lock-down by the end of the week.
