Second COVID-19 outbreak declared at WRH-Met Campus

Another COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Windsor Regional Hospital – Met Campus after five patients on the sixth floor North Unit (6N) tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

There are now two active outbreaks at the hospital after eight people on the fourth floor North Unit (4N) tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week.

Hospital officials said the latest patients to test positive are considered hospital-acquired cases.

All patients on the 6N floor were tested for COVID-19 on Friday and staff are currently in the process of being tested. Hospital officials said the testing process for both patients and staff will be repeated.

Windsor Regional Hospital issued a release on Saturday stating that both 4N and 6N are being monitored very closely and the hospital has already implemented "aggressive infection prevention and control measures".

“As previously stated, we expect to experience these situations as COVID-19 continues to spread in our community,” said Vice President Karen Riddell. “We continue to remain vigilant in taking the correct precautions to reduce the opportunity for spread of the COVID-19 virus by following infection prevention and control guidelines to the best of our ability.”

All patients are being tested for COVID-19 before they are admitted into the hospital, whether they are symptomatic or not.

News of the hospital's second outbreak comes after the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported 171 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday.
