The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported multiple new deaths related to COVID-19 on Monday.
The health unit reported seven deaths among residents of local long-term care homes. A woman in her 70s, two women and one man in their 80s, a woman and one man in their 90s and a man in his 100s passed away after contracting COVID-19.
A man in his 60s, a woman and man in their 70s and a man in his 80s who lived in the broader community also passed away after contracting the virus.
In addition to the 11 new deaths, there were also 174 new cases identified in the region on Monday. There are now 1,704 active cases in the community with 79 hospitalizations.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 7,054 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex. To date, the community has lost 127 people after they contracted the virus and 5,223 people have recovered.
The health unit is currently monitoring 41 active outbreaks in the community including 17 at long-term care or retirement facilities and 15 workplaces.
Provincial numbers were not made available on Monday due to the statutory holiday.
