439 new COVID-19 cases logged over two days in Windsor-Essex

Over the past two days, another eight COVID-19 deaths and 439 cases of the virus were reported in Windsor-Essex.

On Saturday morning, the local health unit reported the numbers for Thursday, December 31 and Friday, January 1.

On Thursday, 257 cases were recorded, with an additional 182 cases recorded on Friday, totalling an increase of 439 cases. There were also eight new deaths reported.

Of the local fatalities, three were in long-term care. Two women in their 70s and a woman in her 80s died. Four women and one man ranging in age from their 50s to their 80s who lived in the community also passed.

According to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, the transmission sources of 374 of the latest cases are still being investigated, 60 were outbreak-related, four were community-acquired and one was from close contact with a confirmed case.

So far, 5,660 individuals have recovered from the virus in Windsor-Essex and 145 people have passed away. As of Saturday, 2,280 cases are active and 103 people are hospitalized. The case count in the region overall has reached 8,085.

There are also now 20 long-term care or retirement homes in COVID-19 outbreak in Windsor-Essex, 16 workplaces, one school, three hospital outbreaks and two community outbreaks.

Provincially, health officials recorded 3,363 COVID-19 cases on Saturday and 2,476 on Friday.
