87 additional COVID-19 cases in London-area

London-Middlesex reported 87 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday and one new death related to the virus.

The newest cases bring the regional case count to 3,471 with 2,696 recoveries. Saturday’s figures include two days’ worth of data due to the holiday.

The latest death was a man in his 90s who was not associated with a retirement or long-term care home. So far, 104 people have died from the virus in the region since the pandemic began.

There are currently 13 active institutional outbreaks in the region including two outbreaks at London Health Sciences Victoria Hospital.

On December 31, an outbreak was declared within the D5-300 – Medicine Unit. An outbreak was declared the following day within the D7-200 – Medicine Unit.

According to the hospital, less than five patients and less than five staff members have tested positive for the virus in each outbreak and there have been no deaths associated with the outbreaks.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit covering St. Thomas, Woodstock and Elgin and Oxford counties, reported 75 new COVID-19 cases Saturday. Since the start of the pandemic, the region has recorded a total of 1,379 cases.

Elsewhere, provincial health officials recorded 3,363 COVID-19 cases on Saturday and 2,476 on Friday.
