The unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region went up slightly in the month of December.
According to the Four County Labour Market Planning Board, the unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region increased by 0.2 percent to 5.6 percent. At the same time, the provincial unemployment rate decreased by 0.2 percent to 8.5 percent, both unadjusted for seasonality. The annual adjusted unemployment rate for the year 2020 was 7.2 percent, which was 2.9 percent higher than 2019 when it was 4.3 percent. Overall net employment in the area decreased by 200 jobs, with full and part-time jobs both decreasing by 100. This was the smallest net change during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Increased employment in service industries over the last few months indicates economic recovery which we hope will continue in 2021,” says Gemma Mendez-Smith, Executive Director of the Four County Labour Market Planning Board. “However, our local unemployment rate, both for December and for 2020 overall, continues to hold the lowest rate in the province.”
