WES for Youth Online providing tips and resources for youth during stressful lockdown

With in class learning being pushed back at least another 2 weeks for elementary students starting today (January 11th), the continued isolation and potential ineffectiveness of online learning could cause worse mental health struggles for youth.

WES for Youth Online's Virtual Programs Director, Lesley Dalzell, says it's an extremely tough thing for youth to be isolated at this time of their lives especially.

"Some of the challenges I think for youth specifically are that loss of peer relationship. As youth and teenagers, that's a huge part of their life, and that's definitely something that's changed."

Dalzell says going off to college or university has really changed, too, for older students. She says many common coping mechanisms still apply during lockdown.

"Good sleep habits, eating well, exercising. But I think it takes on an extra added dimension of importance right now, that you're keeping up with those routines."

With respect to youth, finding coping mechanisms and building a daily structure is very helpful for young people that are used to that during this time. Dalzell also notes that despite how overwhelming the lockdown can feel for youth, it's important to remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

"At some point, I guess we don't really know when, which makes it difficult, but I think we do know that at some point this is gonna pass, right? So kind of holding out that hope that there is an end in sight, and it will come."

If any youth in the area are feeling stressed or overwhelmed with online learning or just the isolation from friends, there are great resources available on the WES for Youth Online website, including links to mental health tips, resources for coping with stress and anxiety, and even the opportunity to set up virtual counselling sessions. There are also phone numbers to call if someone is in immediate crisis and needs help right now.
