New COVID-19 fatalities reported Tuesday in Midwestern Ontario

COVID-19 continues to take a toll on Midwestern Ontario, with more people succumbing to the virus.

Huron Perth Public Health added 36 new cases of COVID-19 to the confirmed list Tuesday. 23 of the new cases were in North Perth, where a serious outbreak continues at the Caressant Care facilities.  In all eight long term care homes and two retirement homes are battling outbreaks. The death toll climbed to 27 fatalities since the pandemic began. An outbreak also continues at Stratford General Hospital's Surgery Unit. Affected staff are currently self-isolating at home and will not return to work until their self-isolation period is complete and they are asymptomatic.

“All outbreak control measures are in place and there has been no transmission to other patient care areas of the hospital,” says Andrew Williams, President & CEO. “We are taking an abundance of caution as we review this situation, are working closely with Huron Perth Public Health and will ensure staff, patients, family members/caregivers and individuals currently scheduled for surgery are kept apprised of all necessary information.”

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health reported 50 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday for a total of 418 active cases.  Ten people are in hospital, and 60 people have succumbed to the virus since the pandemic began.  Two of the new cases were in Wellington County, where there are 91 active cases and five hospitalizations.  Ten people in Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph have now died from the virus in the current situation, five of them at the Caressant Care  homes in Arthur, with an ongoing outbreak continuing in both the Long Term Care and Retirement homes.  There are also outbreaks at Caressant Care in Harriston, Strathcona Long Term Care in Mount Forest, and Wellington Terrace near Fergus. There have been four deaths at Bethsaida Retirement Community in Orangeville and one at The Elliott Community Retirement Home in Guelph.

Just one new case of COVID-19 was confirmed by the Grey Bruce Health Unit Tuesday, in The Blue Mountains.  There are 35 active cases, and they have 103 high risk contacts. Two people are in hospital. There have been no fatalities in Grey Bruce, and there are no outbreaks.  200 COVID-19 Vaccine doses have been administered to residents of Grey Bruce.
