Fairfield Park outbreak continues spreading

The outbreak at Fairfield Park Nursing Home in Wallaceburg is now up to 28 total cases among staff and residents.

Chatham-Kent Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Colby updated the numbers Thursday morning and announced five more cases. There are at least 13 contagious residents at the home, while the rest are staff members.

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance CEO Lori Marshall said hospital staff are helping Fairfield Park with the outbreak and will continue supporting the home for as long as it takes.

"CKHA has redeployed a housekeeping supervisor along with four housekeeping staff to provide additional support," said Marshall. "We were also able to redeploy an additional five personal support workers to the home."

The province also announced extra COVID-19 funding for Fairfield Park on Thursday. Fairfield is receiving an additional $93,300 to bring the total prevention and containment support since the start of the pandemic to $395,700.

The number of outbreaks in Chatham-Kent is now up to 12, one more than on Wednesday. The latest outbreak was declared on Wednesday in the COVID-19 unit at the Chatham hospital. The other outbreaks include the Lambton-Kent Composite School in Dresden, the Tilbury Manor Nursing Home, the Meadow Park Nursing Home in Chatham, four unnamed workplaces, and three unidentified congregate living settings. Altogether there are 33 active cases at local institutions, 12 in workplaces, two at the school, and one in congregate living.

CK Public Health (CKPH) reported Thursday morning the number of active cases jumped by 10 to 113 after 19 new cases and nine resolved cases were reported. The number of local people hospitalized with the virus is down to two after the release of a patient. Marshall said the hospital had nine COVID-19 positive patients as of Thursday morning and two of them were in the Intensive Care Unit. She said the numbers may seem off because some of the contagious patients were transferred from elsewhere and aren't included in the CKPH numbers. Marshall said three patients were recently transferred from outside of the region while the others were either brought by ambulance to the Chatham hospital or chose Chatham because of it was closer to their homes.
