Allegedly drug-impaired driver ends up in the ditch

Two people are facing drug-related charges after police allegedly found some illegal drugs while they were investigating a crash about halfway between Chatham and Wallaceburg.

Chatham-Kent police said they were called to the scene on Baldoon Road near Cedar Hedge Line at around 8 a.m. Thursday after receiving a report about a man driving erratically who ended up in a snow-filled ditch.

Officers said after arriving at the scene, they believed the man was driving under the influence of a drug, so they took him back to police headquarters where a Drug Recognition Expert evaluated him and agreed with that assessment.

Police said they also allegedly found some suspected hydromorphone, fentanyl, oxycodone, drug-related equipment, a cell phone, and a large amount of cash in the man's possession.

Investigators said they learned that the man did not have permission from the registered owner of the vehicle to drive it because he was a suspended driver.

He was charged accordingly and is set to remain in custody pending a future court date of March 1, 2021.

The man's passenger -- a 25-year-old Chatham man -- was also arrested.

Police said the second man was wanted on an outstanding warrant in connection with two shoplifting incidents at Walmart in Chatham last month, adding that officers also reported finding some suspected fentanyl in his possession.

He was charged and later released with future court date.

A 22-year-old Wallaceburg woman and a 28-year-old Sarnia man who were previously ordered to stay away from each other are in more trouble with police after they were allegedly caught riding in the same vehicle during a traffic stop in Wallaceburg Thursday night.

Police said both of the accused were released from custody back in January with conditions not to communicate with each other.

The man and the woman were both charged with failing to comply with their release conditions and later released pending a future court date.
