A 43-year-old Chatham woman has a future court date after allegedly organizing a protest of provincial COVID-19 restrictions.
Officers responded to a demonstration in Chatham on Saturday at the intersection of St. Clair Street and Grand Avenue.
According to police, around 30 people gathered to protest the additional COVID-19 restrictions that were announced by the provincial government the previous day.
Officers said they spoke with the organizer of the event and attempted to educate the participants about the current restrictions in place for social gatherings.
“Our primary goal is to engage and educate our community in an effort to seek compliance with enforcement being used as a last resort," said Chatham-Kent Police Chief Gary Conn. "Gatherings such as this not only jeopardize public safety but contradict the law, therefore those responsible must be held accountable."
However, police responded to the same intersection on Sunday for reports of another demonstration, this time with around 50 people in attendance.
As a result, the organizer was charged on Tuesday night for failing to comply with the Reopening Ontario Act.
She has a court date set for next month.
