COVID-19 cases in the London area have dipped back into the double digits for the first time in several days.
On Saturday, the Middlesex-London Health Unit reported 82 new cases. For the previous three days, case counts had been in the triple digits, with 111 cases reported on Friday and 100 on Thursday.
There was however one new death logged on Saturday, marking the first death that has been reported in the region since Monday.
According to the health unit, Saturday's death was a man in his 80s who was not associated with retirement or long-term care home. To date, 196 people have passed away in London-Middlesex.
The region’s total case count is now at 9,804 with 1,002 known active cases, down from 1,034 the previous day.
Another 82 variant infections were identified for a total of 1,551. Of those, 1,549 are the B.1.1.7 strain that originated in the U.K. and two are the P.1 variant from Brazil. There are 236 cases confirmed with a mutation-positive sample.
Outbreaks remain at eight university residences in the region, one child care facility and five schools.
Meanwhile, there are currently no outbreaks at any local institutional facilities.
In Ontario, provincial health officials logged 4,094 additional cases of the virus on Saturday. The total number of cases in the province is now at 441,404 with 392,044 recoveries and 7,887 deaths.
