No injuries after accidental house fire in Chatham

A house fire in Chatham has caused $300,000 in damage.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue said heavy smoke was coming from the roof when firefighters arrived at the home at 158 West Street in Chatham on Monday afternoon. Fire department spokesperson Whitney Burk said two people who were home doing renovations at the time were able to escape without injury.

Burk added fire crews had to battle high heat and smoke on their way to the attic. The blaze tied up 19 firefighters, Chatham-Kent paramedics, and police for a while. Burk said paramedics worked with crews to perform firefighter rehab and safety. Police evacuated homes on either side of the property during the fire but Burk said residents were able to return shortly after.

The fire was deemed accidental as a result of the construction work being performed.

No injuries were reported.
