The Bluewater District School Board has written a letter to Ontario's education minister asking for a localized approach to reopening schools under direction of the local medical officer of health.
The letter says the board has heard from quite a few concerned parents and guardians, who want a return to in-person learning with COVID-19 health and safety protocols in place for the remainder of the current school year.
The board points to a consistent trend of low COVID-19 case numbers in the Grey Bruce region, and adds if deemed safe, reopening schools before the end of June is imperative to student mental health and well-being. The letter also underlines the difficulties faced by many families as they attempt to support remote learning while managing work and other responsibilities.
The board says its partners at Grey Bruce Public Health have advocated for an approach to reopening schools that considers the favourable circumstances unique to the Grey Bruce area.
