Hope Haven in Chatham is offering residents a place to cool off in response to the extreme heat alert issued for the region.
Those in need of a cool place can visit the centre at 183 Wellington St. W., in downtown Chatham from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. throughout the duration of the heat alert.
In addition, two local organizations are providing free transportation to the centre. The public can call ROCK Missions at 519-354-0430, extension 205, or NeighbourLink at 519-352-564 for a free ride.
Environment Canada extended the heat alert on Monday as daytime temperatures are expected to reach 31 C or warmer, over the next couple of days.
Chatham-Kent Employment and Social Services are also assisting eligible residents with the purchase of a portable air conditioner. Those in need may be eligible to receive up to $300 to purchase a new, energy-star-certified air conditioner if they do not currently have a working air conditioner.
Applicants will be income tested and must fall below the Statistics Canada low-income threshold for their household size to qualify. They will also be asked to verify their income and provide proof of enrolment in the Ontario Electricity Support Program or be willing to complete an application if paying hydro costs.
Residents can apply by calling 519-351-8573.
