Man accused of stealing BLM flag to plead guilty

A Dresden man accused of stealing a Black Lives Matter flag in June will plead guilty.

Zachery McEvoy, 41, told the court in Chatham on Thursday he plans to plead guilty but is still waiting for his disclosure of evidence from the Crown. McEvoy is representing himself.

The Crown is seeking restitution in the form of a fine.

McEvoy will return to court remotely on October 28, 2021 to get a date to enter the guilty plea.

Police previously said the flag was removed from the area of Main Street and North Street on June 19, 2021 and found in a nearby garbage can. The same flag was stolen the following day, according to police.

McEvoy was arrested on June 21, 2021 and charged with theft under $5,000 and being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000.

His case has been in court for just over two months.

“We would like to remind everyone that hate or bias has no place in our society,” Chatham-Kent police said after the arrest. “This behaviour will not be tolerated here in Chatham-Kent as this form of discrimination undermines everyone’s safety.”
