A firefighter's quick thinking is getting the credit for preventing a family from getting injured and potentially losing their entire home to a fire.
Chatham-Kent fire officials said that around 2:40 p.m. Monday, a firefighter from outside the area was travelling on Brigden Road near Tupperville when they noticed smoke and flames coming from the side of a nearby two-storey home.
The firefighter stopped to alert the homeowner and a child who were in the residence at the time the fire broke out. Crews were called and the blaze was put out before it could spread into the home the fire department said.
"Firefighters removed several sections of the exterior wall to extinguish hot spots and ensure the fire had not spread further," a statement from Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services said.
Everyone got out of the home safely and no injuries were reported. Officials said around $15,000 worth of damage was reported however, approximately $400,000 in property was saved.
At this point, the cause is considered "undetermined."
