Flood warning issued for Erie Shore Drive

Chatham residents are being asked to avoid the area of Erie Shore Drive as water has already begun to flood the roadway.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued a flood warning Saturday after portions of Erie Shore Drive in Chatham-Kent started flooding.

Manager Jason Wintermute said flooding is predicted to last until the winds shift to the west, which most forecasts are calling for late this afternoon or early this evening.

"Flooding in the area is predicted to increase with the worst of it lasting from early to mid-afternoon," Wintermute said in a release. "If winds don’t shift far enough west, flooding could continue overnight."

The public is being asked to avoid the area to ensure that emergency services can access the area if needed.

Wintermute said the waves on the lake can be strong, which will make the shoreline slippery. There could also be hazardous debris within the waves and water which could be thrown onto the shoreline.

The previously issued Flood Watch remains in effect for other shoreline areas.
