Local COVID death toll surpasses 100

The local COVID-19 death toll has surpassed 100.

Lambton Public Health reported two more deaths linked to the virus, for a total of 101 since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The latest two were a long-term care resident in their 80s, and another individual in their 70s passed away at Bluewater Health.

In its daily update, the health unit reported 46 new lab confirmed cases, up to 7,999. The number of resolved cases increased by 162 to 7,304, lowering the number of known active infections by 118 to 594.

There are 16 active institutional and workplace outbreaks, unchanged from Tuesday.

There are 53 COVID-positive patients at Bluewater Health, down six. The hospital said 10 of the patients are in intensive care.

The local weekly rate of infection per 100,000 population dropped to 573.1 for the week of January 9 to 15, down from 799.4 the week before. The positivity rate was up slightly to 31.8 per cent from 28.5 per cent.

To date, 77 per cent of eligible residents aged five and up are fully vaccinated for the virus, and 82 per cent have had one dose of a vaccine.
