Conservatives reportedly set to vote on O'Toole's leadership

Conservative Members of Parliament are said to be gearing up to vote on Erin O'Toole's future leading the party.

According to a report by the Toronto Star, at least 35 of 119 MPs have signed on to hold a vote that would decide whether or not O'Toole remains at the head of the caucus.

The report adds that MPs are planning to oust O'Toole by using the Reform Act, a legislation that gives members some power over how their caucus functions.

A review can only be launched if 20 per cent of the members sign a written notice to the caucus chair. With 35 members said to have signed, the threshold for a review will have already been met. What would come next is a secret ballot by all MPs, and if the expulsion of O'Toole is approved by the majority of the caucus, he would be forced to step down immediately.

The Tories fell short in the 2021 election securing 119 seats while the Liberal Party under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau formed a minority government for the second time in row with 160 seats.

O'Toole was named party leader in August 2020 after former leader Andrew Scheer resigned in December 2019.
