Chatham man charged after allegedly assaulting officers

Chatham-Kent police have arrested and charged a 26-year-old man after he allegedly kicked, head-butted and spat at police officers.

Police said on Saturday officers spotted the man, who was wanted for breaching his release conditions, on Lacroix Street in Chatham.

Officers said they attempted to stop the male, however, he ran and started jumping fences through neighbouring backyards. After a foot chase, police said the man was located on Emma Street and later placed under arrest.

Police said while in custody, the man spit at officers as well as kicked and head-butted them. Officers also said the man caused damage to the rear of a police cruiser and once inside the station, he caused further damage to the cell block.

As a result, the 26-year-old man from Chatham is facing charges for resisting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer, uttering threats to cause death, and two counts of mischief under $5,000.

The man was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
