Winter storm warning in effect for southwestern Ontario

Environment Canada has issued a storm warning for most parts of southwestern Ontario, where a mix of freezing rain and snow is expected in the coming days.

The national weather agency initially issued a special weather statement on Tuesday, but that statement was upgraded to a winter storm warning Wednesday afternoon.

The warning is in effect for London, Middlesex County, Elgin County, Oxford County, Chatham-Kent, and Windsor-Essex.

The agency said freezing rain, mixed with ice pellets at times, will begin Thursday morning. Up to five millimetres of ice may accumulate.

The precipitation is expected to change to snow Thursday afternoon and last into Friday morning. Upwards of 20 centimetres of snow is possible.

Environment Canada is advising residents to be careful when walking or driving in affected areas.
