Municipality seeking public interest in community bike-share program

Chatham-Kent is putting out a call to cycling advocates interested in creating a community bike-share program.

Municipal staff have launched a request for expression of interest (REOI) for residents or business owners interested in developing a small-scale, tourism-focused bike rental program.

The program would run as a pilot project this summer.

Tourism Development Officer Andrea McCulligh says it's an opportunity for businesses to take advantage of the growing interest in bike tourism.

"As people start coming out of the pandemic, they are looking for opportunities to be outside, be active but also in a safe manner," said McCulligh. "Biking is a great way to do that."

McCulligh says the tourism department would offer promotional support, marketing support, as well as potential start-up funding assistance.

"The municipality is not interested in running or directing the potential bike program," said McCulligh. "We are a support for anybody who is interested in looking into it."

Project operators will have the responsibility of selecting a location close to tourist attractions, restaurants, water and trails. According to the municipality, over 55 trails exist within Chatham-Kent which include roadway lanes and multi-use paths.

McCulligh says many communities around southwestern Ontario have implemented similar programs and have proven to be successful.

"Every program is different but there is a lot of opportunities if you have the right idea or vision," said McCulligh.

Residents or business owners who are interested in the project have up until March 21 to submit their expression of interest. The REOI submissions must be sent to this email address, ckpurchasing@chatham-kent.ca.
