Third Street Bridge construction resumes

After being put on hold over the winter, construction is set to start back up on the Third Street Bridge in Chatham and that will result in some more road closures.

According to the municipality, Thames Street/St. Clair Street will be closed between Dover Street/Emma Street and Kent Street starting on Monday, March 7 at  7 a.m.

The road is being closed again in order for crews to complete the Third Street Bridge reconstruction project.

The bridge closed completely to vehicle and pedestrian traffic in early May 2021 to allow crews to complete millions of dollars worth of upgrades and repairs to the structure. The original project timeline of the Third Street Bridge rehabilitation project targeted two lanes of traffic on the structure by the end of November 2021.

However, in late 2021, the municipality announced that due to several challenges and setbacks, the project would not be completed in time and the bridge would remain closed throughout the winter. As a result, Thames Street was reopening during that time.

The municipality is anticipating that the bridge project will now be completed at the end of June 2022.

The following two detour routes are currently posted for the Third Street Bridge closure:

  • Grand Avenue – Lacroix Street – Richmond Street – Queen Street
  • Queen Street – School Street – Centre Street – Fifth Street – Victoria Avenue - Grand Avenue East
CKTransit Detours for Route 1 and Route 2 are posted on the bus, at the downtown terminal and on the website at: www.cktransit.ca.
