Chatham-Kent police took an awful lot of firearms, ammunition and drugs off the street in 2021, but it was slightly less than the previous year.
An annual report from the Administrative Support Branch showed that police processed 454 firearms, prohibited weapons, and ammunition last year, everything from rifles to handguns to brass knuckles. A total of 166 firearms and 123 pounds of ammunition were destroyed in 2021.
The report also showed that over half (54%) of the drugs seized in Chatham-Kent last year are methamphetamine and fentanyl. Police said methamphetamine accounts for 29 per cent of the seized drugs while fentanyl is 25 per cent of the pie. Marijuana and cocaine were third and fourth on the list.
Police reported that drug paraphernalia was seized in 136 incidents last year.
