Wallaceburg walking bridge to remain closed for now

The LO Stonehouse Walking Bridge in Wallaceburg will remain closed until at least 2023.

The bridge, which runs over the Sydenham River, was closed by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent in November 2021, due to public safety concerns.

In an update on Friday afternoon, the municipality announced that it had retained a consulting company to complete a detailed assessment of the bridge.

"To ensure continued public safety, it is being recommended that the structure remain closed until a comprehensive rehabilitation of the bridge has been completed," municipal officials said through a media release.

According to the municipality, Chatham-Kent Engineering is expected to bring a report to council at the March 28 meeting that will seek approval to move forward with a rehabilitation project at an estimated cost of $1.6-million.

If approved, the municipality anticipates that construction will be completed in 2023.
